Cork protest against Donald Trump’s Travel Ban

Over 350 people attended a demonstration organised by People Before Profit at Daunt Square in Cork on 2 February to express solidarity with those communities affected by Donald Trump’s policies and call on the Irish government to cancel the St Patrick’s Day visit to the White House.

The demonstration gathered at 17:30 and after a number of speeches, marched up and down Patrick Street before reconvening for further speeches on Daunt Square.

A number of speakers address the crowd, from groups including People Before Profit (Gary Baus), the Anti-Austerity Alliance (Nik Harrison), Anti-Deportation Ireland (Jacqui O’Riordan),the Irish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (Arthur Leahy), UCC Islamic Society (Nuura Hagi), as well as Cork residents and members of the Islamic community Ali Hamou and Rasham Baig. Thanks to all those who attended, volunteered, and spoke – it was an inspirational show of solidarity.

A video recording of the demonstration is available on periscope.tv (thanks to Ed Fitzgerald for filming)

Media coverage of the event is available at the Irish Examiner and the Evening Echo.

Irene Halpin Long, who attended the demonstration and addressed the crowd, has written a post about the Cork event entitled “The power of the collective voice and why your voice is important” – strong points on why it is important that we use our collective power to speak out against injustice in the world.

We will continue to campaign nationally against the toxic politics by Donald Trump. If you would like to, please get involved and join the movement.
